Adams Street Galley (ASG) is launching a non-profit food hall, co-op kitchen, mentorship program, and training facility to support under-served and low-income communities by helping educate, train, and provide real-world exposure and experience in agribusiness, food service, restaurant operations, and commercial kitchen operation.
ASG is a start-up non-profit that is building programming around a vision for our community and led by food professionals that know what is takes to thrive and give back.
We will create a support network of growers, chefs, dietitians, restaurant groups, food suppliers, and personal development coaches/experts that focus on growth mindset, obliterating poverty, and eradicating systemic oppression through food entrepreneurism.
In addition to access to fresh, healthy food options, a community’s choices about what to eat are severely limited by the options available to them and what they can afford—and many “food deserts” contain an overabundance of fast-food chains selling cheap protein and dairy-based foods that are high in fat, sugar, and salt. Processed foods typically sold by corner shops, convenience stores, and liquor stores are usually just as unhealthy. While unhealthy eating may be economically cheaper in the short-term, the consequences of long-term constrained access to healthy foods is one of the main reasons that ethnic minority and low-income populations suffer from statistically higher rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other diet-related conditions than the general population.
There is no easy solution to this problem. Artificially introducing alternatives ignores the socio-economic and cultural fabric of the community. Education is critical but the barriers to reaching consumers at all levels are many.
ASG will overcome these barriers by meeting the consumers right where they are, by gaining an understanding of their socioeconomic, cultural, and familiar challenges that could possibly disallow them to make healthy food options. ASG will tailor its educational curriculum to help consumers make informed decisions and choices that not only benefit their immediate family but for generations to come.
ASG will overcome these challenges by innovating how food options are introduced to our communities by helping the community itself seize change. We will create a new generation of food entrepreneurs that will be empowered to bring fresh, healthy food options back to their communities as food service professionals, restaurateurs, and commercial food producers. We will accomplish this by creating hands-on programming that builds key skills around Restaurateurism, Ethical Sourcing, Urban Farming, Nutrition, and Workmanship.
Our programs are designed to start creating entrepreneurs that care about our communities.
